We are considering changing our sick pay use. Currently we offer up to a max of 12days paid sick time use. The access to this paid benefit has been very flexible. Generally 2 catergories of use: 1) employee uses for doctor's appt (for themselves or to attend a family members appt) 2) calling in sick We would like to restructure this flexibility. If an employee calls in sick, on the first day there would not be any paid sick time benefit. The paid benefit would only factor in on the 2nd day of illness. Our hopes are that this would reduce the amount of sick time calls on a Friday or Monday (which we have quite a bit of currently). Has anyone else incorporated this type of policy for paid sick time? If so has it reduced employee rate of calling in to extend a weekend? What is your opinion about changing access to the paid sick pay use?

| We have a rule in our hnadbook that you can not call in "sick" after a paid or before a paid holiday without a doctors note otherwise you will not get paid for the holiday

We have the same policy regarding holiday pay. I would be conserned that now employees are being encouarged to take two days + off sick rather than one with this system. If an employee is sick they will most likely still call in and knowing they didnt use a sick day will call in again to use them. If they didn't call out two days then their sick days would never get used if I am understanding you correctly.
You can make a policy that in order to get paid for the sick leave that a doctor's excuse is required. But be aware that when an employee goes to the doctor and is iick that in most cases the doctor will write them out to rest for several days. This will hurt production more that allowing an employee to rest for the one day they most likely would have taken on their own.

We are evaluating our sick leave as well and have the same problem with people taking their sick time for any reason. The practice has been to allow employees to use their sick time for Doctor's appointments, or for going home at the end of the day when they are not feeling well. This has led to some employees having zero sick time when they became sick for several days. It also leads to abuse in unplanned absences.
Does anyone else allow their employees to use sick time for Doctor's appointments? If so, what parameters are placed around the use?
Thanks, Diane Smith
