What is the best practice for determining how long we should retain hard copies of performance evaluations?

You should keep all employee records including employee evaluation hard copies in the employee personnel file. These records should be kept for a total of 5 years after the employee leaves your organization.

What would be the appropriate duration to keep employee applications in file? I just want to confirm if it's 6 months?

Most companies have a policy that determines how long applications should stay on file, but not all do. We keep ours for 1 year, but 6 months is fine. Its really up to you, and how often you refer back to them. There are really no laws that state how long applications should be kept on file. Just make sure that you shred them when you plan to dump them. Identity theft is everywhere, and you would not want to be the one that contributed to it.

Would hard copies of time cards follow under the same rule of thumb?

Keep all timecards for active employees until terminated?

Keep all timecards for terminated employees until 5 years after termination date?
