| Has anyone ever handled an employee being allergic to another employee's perfume? If so how did you present it.

| We have a policy that addresses this issue, employees are discouraged to wear perfume because people may be allergic. I would approach the employee and say "I have a problem and I'm not sure how you are going to feel about it and I really appreciate if you can help me solve it." and then describe the issue without mentioning who made the complaint and you can go from there and get some of type of commitment from the employee on either toning down the perfume or maybe not wear it to work at all. Obviously, document everything, just in case, it comes up again. Good luck!

G. Silvia thank you so much for your response. It is a whole department (Manufacturing) that I need to address. You said you have a policy on this issue, is it published in your handbook? Is there any way for me to get a copy of your policy?

Most recently, we reminded everyone via email of our "Fragrance-Free" policy (everyone has a company email account). As with any new policy, we ensured all affected employees received notice of the policy (new or revised).
Other methods of communication could include inter-office memos, department meetings, bulletin board postings, paycheck stuffers, policy acknowledgement requiring the employees' signatures, etc. Bottom line, make sure all affected employees are aware of the policy.

E. Barfield you mentioned that all affected employees received a reminder of the frangrance-free policy. Does your policy apply to everyone in the company or just certain departments? If you could send me a copy of your policy as an example I would certainly appreciate it. You can e-mail it to me at zainam@generalmonitors.com.

Depending on what you are manufacturing, you should think about integrating it into you GMP training or at the very least make it a part of your prehire orientation. Having worked in the food manufacturing industry and paper goods, it becomes an issue when you Haagen Dazs ice cream which you buy at 7-11 has a faint wiff of Liz Claiborne. Furthermore, if that paper cup which you just got from the counter at McDonalds smell a little like brute, rest assured the manufacturer did not enforce "fragrance free" in the GMP program.
