Hi everyone,
My company is recruiting for some Payroll Specialist positions and we seem to be running into a brick wall at this point. We want people with at least a few years experience and not just with ADP. The position is more complicated than that and requires more experience with the actual processing side of payroll. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good place to post a job ad for this type of position? We have tried Monster.com and craigslist.com already. In the past we have also pulled resumes from careerbuilder.com but that took an enormous amount of time to pull and cold-call a ton of people. Or does anyone have any candidates they could refer to me? We are located in Orange County, CA.
I would really appreciate any input I could get, please feel free to email me at tai.talamantez@mainstayca.com
Thanks! ~ Tai Talamantez

My company, too, has run into the "brick wall" in trying to find candidates for production positions at our facility in Irwindale. We've run ads in the L.A. Times, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and tried through LA Works, the local Chamber and the City. Anyone have any good suggestions for looking for candidates? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you! Kathy White Finance & H/R Manager

For the production jobs we find a banner or sidewalk sign out side our building works great. It can just say "Now Hiring" or you can put specific positions to attempt to narrow the applications down to qualified applicants. If you are in an industrial area you will probably find that a lot of people who are currently working will come in on their lunch, before, or after work to fill out an application looking for a better opportunity or benefits.
If you go to ssgraphicsco.com they sell the sidewalk signs with changing letters for specific positions.

Also you can call your local EDD/Unemployment office and they will refer people who were recently seperated from employment to your office to fill out an application.
Also you can post your open positions for free on Cal Jobs (EDD's website). Once you post a job you have access to the resume search and can cold call people who have posted their resumes for employment. The cold calling is time consuming and some of the people have already found jobs because their resume stays active for 90 days of the last time they log in. But if you are getting desperate it may be worth your time.

You might not want to look to staffing agencies for every position, but the situation that you're in might be best solved by outsourcing the job seach to a staffing agency that specialized in making sure that their candidates are qualified in specific positions such as the one that you're looking for.
GOOD LUCK!

using EDD is usually the last place I look. I "normally" find it to have the least desirable people.

This is related to your question. But first, let me suggest posting an ad on Craigslist. We have alot of luck getting lower level positions filled through that job board.
Also, how are you classifying your payroll specialist. We have a payroll person here who wants to be made an exempt employee, but I do not see the criteria being met. This person also does A/P and says that most A/P people are exempt.
What are your thoughts?

I have never heard of an A/P person being exempt.
