Hello,

Could someone advise on whether or not there are specific rules/laws on where performance evaluations are kept, and also how long they should be kept?

We have heard conflicting information--to keep the evaluations together with the employee's personnel file vs. to keep the evaluations separate from the personnel file. Did a search on hrcalifornia.com for specific information on storage of evaluations, but didn't find anything. What is the most common practice?

Also, how long are performance evaluations commonly kept? We have many employees who have been with us for over 5 years, some even over 10 years. The "records retention requirements" table listed in hrcalifornia.com states evaluaitons only need to be kept for two years max. But does that rule apply to current employees or just former employees?

Thank you in advance for your help!
