We have a several employees that take advantage of the way we track time in our office. We do not have a punch in time clock and this makes it difficult for me as a manager. I am always babysitting everyone especially the employees who do not make an effort to come in on time. The most frequent excuse is traffic, which I understand can be unpredictable. But what do you do when an employee is late 3 days out of 5, in 15 min. intervals? I have given the employees several verbal and written warnings, but it does not seem to help. I have also taken away some company previledges (the ones that I can) and that does not help as well. Although, it is stressed in our company not to mind other employees' performances, they still take notice and are starting to complain. Excessive tardies are grounds for suspension and termination for our company, but we need all the employee help we can get and I believe that is why certain employees take advantage. Help!!! What can I do? Can I start some sort of chart with everyone's names on it so that others can see the tardies and perhaps that will wake up the employees that are coming in late or will that cause an HR issue? We don't have an in-house HR and the managers are the ones dealing with their department. My department is in the office and I can't seem to get any help on this. If anyone can give me some advice, I will appreciate it immensely. Thank you, Anna Kordik

I would write an attendance policy with a tracking system (such as points). It should define diciplinary action that will be taken and the amount of violations or points for each level of dicipline. Verbal, written, probation, suspension, and finally termination. Obviously the employees know you notice and are displeased but are doing nothing to correct the problem. As you stated, it is probably because they know you are in a tight spot and no diciplinary action will be taken.
I think your company should make an example of someone and suspend them from 1 to 3 days without pay. Once employees see this happen a lot will straighten up, not wanting that to happent to them.
We have a system in place and only in rare cases of really poor attendance do we have to suspend or terminate anyone.
