If an employee wants to "gift" some sick time to another employee (for a special need), how have you handled that? Anyone ever dealt with this before?

I wouldn't recommend it. You would be setting a precedent.

I wouldn't do that. Then you set precedent and have to do it for everyone. How confusing to have to track. CA has so many Leave policies, I can't imagine the employee in need wouldn't be able to find another solution with a bit of guidance.

There are tax implications to gifting sick time as well as the issues with setting a precedent. If you do decide to move forward with this I'd suggest you draft a policy and only allow for donations to a gift bank rather than to individual employees directly. Littler has a great article on their website on some things that should be taken into consideration before setting up a sick time gifting policy. You could probably search their website and find it.
